Title

EVN+e-MERLIN -SPARCS - Resolving the MIcroJansky Sky

Abstract

The SKA PAthfinder Radio Continuum Surveys (SPARCS) are providing deep-field imaging with multiple SKA pathfinders/precursors (MeerKAT/JVLA/e-MERLIN etc). A combination of sensitivity and high angular resolution imaging over a range of spatial scales (arcsec to mas) is required to understand the star formation history (SFH) and its evolution with cosmic time; characterizing relative contribution of radio emission associated with star-formation and AGN in galaxies. This and a range of galaxy evolution topics can be uniquely and robustly tackled through wide-field VLBI surveys. We propose a 24-hour deep wide-field, multi-phase centre (54) EVN+e-MERLIN survey, targeting arcsec-scale detections from the e-MERLIN SPARCS survey (rms~10uJy/beam). Combined EVN+e-MERLIN array will provide the spatial dynamic range required to disentangle SF from AGN and aid the planning of future SKA(-VLBI) deep surveys. This proposal aims to: i) provide high spatial dynamic range observations for the robust determination of the compact radio AGN components; ii) provide the first multi-resolution view of the transition between diffuse SF and compact AGN; and iii) contribute to multiple key technical verifications relevant to SKA-pathfinders and VLBI itself.

Context for this data

This data is part of the archive of VLBI data maintained by JIVE on behalf of the EVN, a network of radio telescopes located primarily in Europe and Asia, with additional antennas in South Africa. The EVN archive itself has the DOI https://doi.org/10.17616/R3Z197
