Title

Resolving Fermi blazar jets to measure the intergalactic magnetic field

Abstract

TeV-emitting blazars provide a powerful, indirect probe of magnetic fields in cosmic voids through the spatial signatures imprinted by electromagnetic cascades in GeV gamma-ray data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope. The morphology of this secondary emission depends critically on the projected orientation of the blazar jet on the sky, which can only be measured with very long baseline interferometry. We propose European VLBI Network observations at 5 GHz of a sample of high-frequency-peaked BL Lac objects to resolve their parsec-scale jets and expand the number of sources with well-defined jet axes from approximately 20 to more than 30. This enlarged, homogeneous sample will enable a statistically robust measurement of the strength of the intergalactic magnetic field.
