Pilot EVN Study of Cygnus X-2
We propose an EVN observing campaign of the neutron star X-ray binary Cygnus X-2 to investigate the nature and evolution of its jet ejecta, which have only been spatially resolved once to date. A key aim is to search for evidence of ultra-relativistic energy flows, thereby providing insights into the prevalence of this phenomenon in neutron star X-ray binaries. In parallel, we will quantify the effects of scatter broadening at the frequency of our observations (1.7 GHz). Provided these effects are not prohibitive, we aim to undertake a follow-up EVN+MeerKAT study at this frequency, capitalising on the increased sensitivity, and characterising the magnetic fields of the source via polarimetry, using our established MeerKAT polarisation calibration procedures.
