Abstract

Despite the fact that VLBI observations are still scarce in the field of ultracool dwarfs (UCDs), they provide unique insights on the mechanisms responsible for the detected emission and, at the same time, they allow a better characterization of the orbital motion in binary systems as well as their dynamical masses. We request sensitive C-band EVN observations of a new sample of ultracool dwarfs with previously confirmed radio emission aimed to observationally constrain the brightness temperature, and therefore provinding insights into the magnetic activity of these objects. We also include two binary UCD systems, where the proposed observations can determine in which of the substellar components the radio emission originates. This would help us reveal the possible differences in the magnetic field configuration of each component while starting the astrometric campaign needed to measure their dynamical masses which are of extreme value to evolutionary models. This proposal is a natural extension of the already observed EC067 and EC077.

Context for this data

This data is part of the archive of VLBI data maintained by JIVE on behalf of the EVN, a network of radio telescopes located primarily in Europe and Asia, with additional antennas in South Africa. The EVN archive itself has the DOI https://doi.org/10.17616/R3Z197
