Title

Revealing the nature of gamma-ray flares in J1048+7143

Abstract

We propose low-cadence EVN monitoring of the blazar J1048.4+7143 at 22 GHz during 2026 to investigate the physical mechanisms driving its unique and regular behavior observed in gamma-ray light curves. This source simultaneously exhibits two rare phenomena: quasi-periodic major flares and repeated patterns of gamma-ray flares. The upcoming expected outburst in 2026 presents a critical opportunity to test competing models: jet precession induced by a binary supermassive black hole, and the passage of emission features through a structured jet sheath. Our observations will determine whether a new radio component is ejected or if the jet exhibits directional changes without knot formation. Both outcomes are consistent with the binary SMBH framework but will distinguish between these physical scenarios and refine binary SMBH model parameters. This program is complemented by simultaneous optical polarization monitoring from three telescopes and reprocessing of archival EVN & VLBA data using the VIPCALs pipeline. The proposed campaign will provide critical insight into the jet dynamics and high-energy emission processes in this exceptional blazar.

Context for this data

This data is part of the archive of VLBI data maintained by JIVE on behalf of the EVN, a network of radio telescopes located primarily in Europe and Asia, with additional antennas in South Africa. The EVN archive itself has the DOI https://doi.org/10.17616/R3Z197
