In this proposal we ask for EVN+MERLIN observations at 18 cm of a well selected sample of sixteen radio galaxies, including both low-power and high-power objects. The main focus of this project is the investigation of the jet collimation region in relation to the properties of the accretion. In combination with previously obtained high-sensitivity VLBI data at 1 cm and 7 mm, as well as with archival VLBI and VLA observations, we aim at reconstructing the jet expansion profile along a broad range of scales and at constraining the nature of the ambient medium possibly confining the relativistic flow. The requested data can uniquely provide a high-sensitivity imaging at sub-kiloparsec distances from the black hole, bridging the gap between the available VLBI and VLA data. The inclusion of the MERLIN array will allow us to trace the jets on unexplored large scales, while benefiting from the full VLBI resolution necessary to transversely resolve them.

Context for this dataThis data is part of the archive of VLBI data maintained by JIVE on behalf of the EVN, a network of radio telescopes located primarily in Europe and Asia, with additional antennas in South Africa. The EVN archive itself has the DOI https://doi.org/10.17616/R3Z197
