We have found 17 radio loud M dwarfs in the LOFAR LoTTs survey, which emit in excess of what would be predicted from their X-ray activity and the Güdel-Benz relationship. The most likely explanation of the emission mechanism is electron cyclotron maser instability, caused by a companion to the dwarf. We propose pilot VLBI observations to test whether these can be detected with the EVN, and to determine whether the emission region indeed corresponds with the M dwarf, or a possible companion like a planet or cool brown dwarf.
