e-EVN: EA062A, RP030D
We propose a series of four 8-h astrometric e-EVN observations, to measure an accurate parallax distance for the newly-discovered black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1820+070. This would probe the formation mechanism of this high Galactic latitude system, which may be one of the shortest-period black hole X-ray binaries known. Furthermore, an accurate distance measurement would help constrain the mass of the compact object and feed into accurate constraints on the system parameters. This proposal is part of a wider radio and optical campaign to determine the relative importance of the two primary black hole formation scenarios.
